Symbolica has created a framework that will enable it to develop alternatives to the "transformer" deep learning architecture, said Symbolica CEO George Morgan, who formerly worked at Tesla on its self-driving system, referencing a paper the company co-wrote with Google's AI subsidiary DeepMind. Transformers are the basis for viral chatbot ChatGPT and the current generative AI race.
The unit will be led by Mustafa Suleyman, the London-born cofounder of Google DeepMind, who Microsoft hired last month.
To further bolster the project, Tang Tan, the departing design chief for iPhone and Watch at Apple, is joining LoveFrom in February. Tan will lead the hardware designing at the firm, working on the look and shape of upcoming products, including the AI device. During his tenure at Apple, Tan worked on the iPhone, Apple Watch, and AirPods.

"So the largest chip that we made was our first generation. People said we couldn't make it," Cerebras CEO Andrew Feldman said to reporters on Tuesday. "Eighteen months later we did it in seven nanometer. Eighteen months (after that), we've announced a five-nanometer part. This is the largest part by more than three and a half trillion transistors."
